Announcing our First Annual Stitch-a-thon
EVENT CONCLUDED!

That’s right! We’re stitching for a cause! Beginning on August 15th, and going through October 15th, we will be making knitted or crocheted hats, earmuffs, scarves, shawls, gloves, mittens, and fingerless gloves for donation to Portland Rescue Mission. We will also be encouraging our friends and families to sponsor us with pledges of donations to Mattresses In Reach.
An example of how that works:
“Hey Joe! I’m making hats for donation to Portland Rescue Mission. Would you like to pledge a few dollars per hat? Your donation would go to Mattresses In Reach, getting mattresses to people who cannot get them on their own.”
Your sponsors have choices as to how they pledge.
Some examples of ways to pledge are
– $ amount per item
– different $ amounts per various items (maybe scarves take you longer to make than hats, so maybe Joe would want to put a higher $ value on the scarf than on the hat)
– flat donation regardless of your participation level
– $ amount per time unit that you spend stitching
– other (can be specified in the “notes” box of the stitcher’s Pledge Log)
Monetary donations to Mattresses In Reach will be collected at the end of the event. Stitchers should remind their sponsors, who will then be able to go to the “donate to Mattresses In Reach” button near the bottom of this page and make their contribution.
Your sponsors also have choices in how they will be recognized. They can be anonymous or named. (Only those for whom you have checked the “named” box on your pledge log can be listed in Mattresses In Reach posts. Those for whom you do not check “named” will be counted and added to the “Anonymous contributor” category) If they choose to be named, they still get to choose whether or not their contribution amount is publicly shared (same process, no check of box equals no amount posted).
Stitchers also get to choose whether to be named or anonymous, and whether to have their total item count, and/or $amount collected publicly shared. (This choice will be indicated by the stitcher on their pledge log when it is turned in. Up until the final results are posted, all participants will be counted as one lump sum and all will be anonymous.)

Stitching guidelines
– Please use acrylic yarn. Very few people are allergic to acrylic yarn, whereas all natural yarns will be great for some people and very bad for others. We don’t know which individuals will end up with which pieces, so acrylic only please.
– Please resist the urge to bring/send us items that are not on the list of what we are collecting, as we may not have anyone lined up to take them. The list is as follows: (knitted or crocheted) hats, earmuffs, scarves, shawls, gloves, mittens, and fingerless gloves
– You are free to use whatever patterns you already have or find on your own, but we will be posting a few links to pattern sites as well in case anyone wants or needs them.
– We will be hosting “Stitch Together” sessions twice weekly. These are NOT mandatory. On Tuesdays from 4PM to 7PM PST will be our video chat sessions, and on Saturdays from Noon to 3PM PST will be our in person sessions.
Drop-offs
You may bring finished work to our Stitch Togeter sessions at the Library, or wait and bring them all to Mattresses In Reach at the end of the event. If you are not local, you may ship to us instead.

Event Goals
We would like to raise at least $10,000 dollars for Mattresses In Reach, which breaks down to be about $1,115 per week. We will be collecting weekly numbers from our stitchers to help us estimate our progress. These updates are NOT mandatory, but they are encouraged. We like to have an idea of how we are doing.
